Puck: What’s your current state of mind?

Civil Civic: Loose and ready for anything.

Puck: When you guys started playing, did you have a clear idea of the direction you wanted the music to take?

Civil Civic: Very clear. There are a small number of very strict rules concerning the Civil Civic sound, and deviation is punishable by death. We started out as a 7 piece band. Aaron and I are the only survivors, because we obey the rules.

Puck: What’s been keeping you busy these days?

Civil Civic: Struggling for survival in a cruel world and recording our ground-breaking debut album.

Puck: What’s the weirdest thing that happened on tour so far?

Civil Civic: Well, the time when an old homeless guy got up on-stage and played harmonica to « Less Unless » was pretty strange. He looked about 70 and he smelled like a corpse covered in shit, but he knew the song really well. It’s a pity the venue security staff beat him up. He was just expressing himself.

Puck: On which spot would you love to play a show somewhere in the future?

Civil Civic: We’re looking into a summer tour of Antartic research stations, but the overheads are huge.

Puck: You’ve been making music together for a long time now. After a while – I guess words become unnecessary but maybe for you it’s also a distance problem. How do you solve it?

Civil Civic: Well, we’ve only been making music together for 3 years, so we haven’t gotten telepathy going yet. The distance is a logistical hassle, sure, but we cope.

Puck: Why did you settle on London and Barcelona? Is it the weather? Or something about the music scenes?

Civil Civic (Ben): Aaron moved to London to expand his legal practice and get a cockney accent. I moved to Barcelona because I like mojitos and cheesy deep house.

Puck: Tape or vinyl?

Civil Civic: Two inch tape, that’s going to be the next hip format. Every true hipster will have a Studer A827 in their loungeroom.

Puck: What are your pet peeves?

Civil Civic: We don’t have pet peeves. We only have burning hatreds.

Puck: And last but not least! Who’s your favourite Belgian band?

Civil Civic: That’s easy. Plastic Bertrand. The man is a genius and a very strong influence, both on our music and our personal lives.

Cheers!

//Victoria G.
